The Episcopalians built the church in 1841 and it was located where Christ Church is located today. In 1858 a new edifice was built and the Catholics bought the church and moved it to its present location. When the yellow fever epidemic broke out in 1878, the sisters and Father Oberti devoted themselves to caring for the fever victims. The six sisters and Father Oberti fell victim to the disease and died in the fall of 1878. Because of their heroic service the church the church is now a museum dedicated to the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878.
